Falls prevention starts with confidence

One in three Australians over 65 falls each year. The interventions that reduce that number have one thing in common: they target physical capacity and confidence at the same time. Confidence on its own is not enough — but neither is strength.

Why confidence matters

After a first fall, many older adults narrow their lives in subtle ways: they stop going for evening walks, they avoid the grandchildren’s house if there are stairs, they sit out of family gatherings that finish after dark. Each adjustment makes the next fall more likely, because the muscles, balance reactions and reflexes that prevent falls only stay sharp through use.

What the evidence supports

  • Strength training twice a week — particularly through the legs.
  • Balance challenge above level ground (heel-to-toe walking, single-leg standing with controlled progressions).
  • Tai Chi, Otago or LiFE-style programs delivered over 12+ weeks.
  • Home environment audits — lighting, rugs, bathroom rails — done by an OT.
  • A vitamin D check if you spend most days indoors.

How we do it at Being Physio

Our exercise physiologists and physios run small, supervised classes for older adults in addition to one-on-one care. Many of our participants come through Home Care Packages or NDIS plans, but private health and self-pay options are equally available — your initial conversation is free.
